You just released your new EP “Traitors.” Which track defines the band best as a whole?
I think the single we released “Fade” does the best job of showing the scope of our writing. We wanted it to be a very dynamic song, it kind of lifts and drops periodically throughout the song almost like a wave building & releasing as it crashes to shore.

Which track was the most challenging to write and record?
Probably the track that went through the most re-writes and changing was “Traitors PT. II”. A lot of the lead guitars were written in the studio once everything else was fleshed out and there were some melodic changes including the dissonant key shift in the bridge.

How did the title “Traitors” come about?
“Traitors” was born from the nautical interpretation of being betrayed and suffering the consequences of trusting the wrong people. “Traitors Pt I” is essentially being gunned down and trying to defend yourself on the sea by another ship (person) who you had thought was trustworthy. “Traitors Pt. II” is the aftermath, the descent into the ocean and fighting to stay alive as you struggle to breathe.

What about the band name? What did that develop from?
When we first started we all agreed that we liked using a nautical theme for our imagery. We ended up settling on the phrase “Hold Fast” to be included in our name, then added “Hope” as we felt it was fitting for all of us who wanted to share that type of message in today’s society. Then we remembered it was the name of a Thrice song so we were sold on it haha.

Is there a song all collectively most proud of?
Collectively it is probably our song “Fade” from the EP, but we each have our own favorites, including some newer unreleased tracks as well.

Are you planning to release any music videos for any of the EP tracks?
We’re in the process of storyboarding a music video for “Fade”, to begin filming (hopefully) by the end of the month! If our schedules permit we definitely will do more than 1 video.

How would you describe your new record in 3 words?

  1. Creative
  2. Dynamic
  3. Energetic

How were the writing and recording processes different?

  • The first EP was written by Andrew and Jason before Perry and Brandon were in the band. Writing the music for the new EP was the first time that all four of us brought our ideas to the table. As a result, we were able to learn from each other and use our differences to help our sound grow and evolve. For this EP, everything was tracked at Architekt Music in Butler, NJ. We went into the recording process with the new music mostly done and ideas for some parts that we wanted to bounce off our studio engineer. This allowed to spend time exploring synth tones, vocal effects, harmonies, etc and use the studio to bring out the best in each song.

Do you plan on touring to promote the record?

  • We have a bunch of shows coming up in and around the NYC metro area the next couple months after the EP comes out at the end of March. All of the dates can be found on our website and social media accounts.

Which song on the record is the best representation of Break Out Day?

  • Probably “The Party’s Over.”  It’s very upbeat and continues that pop-punk feel from the first EP, but also shows the growth the band has taken over the last few years.

Do you all have one collective favorite song? Or does everyone have a different one?

  • Everyone pretty much has a different favorite song off the new EP.  It really depends on how connected the band member feels with the song lyrically and instrumentally as well.
    • Andrew & Jason:  One More Night
    • Perry:  The Party’s Over
    • Brandon:  Deleted Imagery

What is Break Out Day’s main goal to accomplish with this release?

  • We wanted this EP to build on what we had already done before and offer something new and exciting. We want our listeners to have a sense of familiarity when it comes to our sound and be excited for the future.
