Dancing With Ghosts Gets Personal On New LP "Hex," Out NOW
JACKSONVILLE, FL | MARCH 22ND, 2019 - Jacksonville-based electro-rock duo Dancing With Ghosts have released their new album "Hex," out on all digital and streaming platforms NOW. The duo touches upon personal topics on "Hex," delving into darker lyricism that mirrors the album's electronic production. All 14 tracks come together cohesively to create a body of work that's a sleek combination of both electropop and active rock. "Hex" shows a sinister side to the duo, but each track remains a digestible piece of ear candy. The wide range of topics discussed on "Hex," including a slew of emotions centralized around mental illness, put Dancing With Ghosts on a platform to bring light to this era of darkness. Dancing with Ghosts is an electronic-infused alternative rock band from Jacksonville, Florida. The band was started by Josh Cannon back in 2015. After multiple attempts to work within a traditional band dynamic, Josh ventured off on his own and began writing, recording and performing his own music. In 2017, Stephanie Conner joined the band a few months after Dancing with Ghosts' first full length release: "Koyaanisqatsi". Stephanie contributed her vocal talents on the band’s second album, "The Nightmare Inside You", which was released in March of 2018. Along the way, Josh and Stephanie have been producing numerous music videos which have garnered thousands of views on their YouTube channel. Josh and Stephanie have taken a "do it yourself" approach to every aspect of the band which is something they take great pride in. As a result of a successful podcast Josh hosts (Uncovering Unexplained Mysteries), Dancing with Ghosts have passionate fans all over the world. ![]() What can you tell us about your upcoming album? Our upcoming album, “Hex”, started out as a necessity. Stephanie, the second singer/keyboardist, joined the band after our first album so her vocals were not represented on those recordings. Since I was going back and recording Stephanie over the old songs I also was able to take the opportunity to tweak and re-work some of the song structures/mixing techniques. Also, we wanted to streamline the process of selling our albums by only having one definitive CD instead of two. Which track was the most difficult to write and record? I’d have to say our newest song “The Narcissist” was the most challenging song to write for. The song itself was broken down into two very different sounding parts. You had the dirty, distorted verses and then the cleaner, soaring pre-choruses. For the life of us we could not figure out a chorus for this song. We were so happy with the verses and pre-choruses, we did not want to ruin any of that with a lack-luster chorus. We tried a bunch of different ideas before finally settling on an anthemic, 80’s-style sounding chorus complete with gang vocals. If you could pick one track on the record that best exemplifies Dancing With Ghosts’ sound as a whole, which would it be? We feel that “The Nightmare Inside You” is the perfect song that sums up what we’re about both lyrically and musically. The lyrics address dealing with mental health problems in a very thematic and story-driven way. This is a topic we write about quite often as well painting story-driven narratives. Musically this song is electronic and driving, but also has a strong guitar-driven foundation at certain points. As far as tones and soundscapes go, I feel this song has everything but the kitchen sink. From reverse glass shattering samples to operatic choirs, this song was a high point for us creatively. Do you plan to release any music videos to help promote the release? Yes, in fact we are working on filming a music video right now. The song we’ve chosen is called “Eyes Wide Open” and is our “most pop” sounding song in our repertoire. The beauty of this song is that even though it sounds poppy, the lyrical content is dark. It is literally about leaving a cult so you can imagine the music video is going to be dark and complex. We’re no strangers to making music videos that stand out and grab people’s attention. Are you looking to tour in 2019? Do you have any upcoming shows? Yes we definitely planning on doing a summer tour although the details for that havent’ been firmed up yet so it’s still a work in progress. Currently, since we are working on this music video, we have dialed back the live performances however we do have a show March 23rd at the Blue Note in Tampa, Florida and April 21st at 1904 in Jacksonville, Florida. ![]() Dancing With Ghosts Announce Upcoming Album "Hex" Out 3/22 JACKSONVILLE, FL | MARCH 15TH, 2019 - Jacksonville-based electro-rock duo Dancing With Ghosts have announced the upcoming release of their new album "Hex," out on all digital music platforms March 22nd, 2019. An album created on raw emotion, lead vocalist Jennifer Valdez began writing the tracks after experiencing a painful life event. Fueled by this emotion, Keys And Vices created a straight-forward, in-your-face, powerful rock sound, with the end result being "Chronic Nostalgia." Tackling lyrical topics such as personal vices, death of love, and illness, Keys And Vices successfully captures their essence in all eight tracks. "About "Chronic Nostalgia", the band states: “Chronic Nostalgia, is a blueprint for everyone who’s ever had to survive heartbreak. It reminds the listener that love doesn’t belong to them, they belong to it. This isn’t an album about love in the classic sense. The pain of a heartbreak comes from many places - the death of a loved one, betrayal and abandonment of a soulmate, or your own vices that destroy the possibility of triumph.” Keys And Vices, is an indie rock band that is built on powerful vocals, intimate songwriting, and dynamic melodies. Drawing from sporadic influences such as Foo Fighters to Alabama Shakes, and Jeff Buckley to Elton John, the songs tour through diverse musical genres. The backbone of Keys And Vices, Jennifer Valdez, is a brilliant and ambitious musician, singer/songwriter. Jennifer’s ability to evoke genuine emotion through her music and lyrics, take the listener on a storybook bender, sans the reading glasses. With the eclectic sounds and raw energy of Kevin McCarty on bass, and the effortless offbeat meets hard rock drum styling of Kristopher Ayala, these exceptionally talented musicians have merged 3 different musical backgrounds to create one captivating band. When asked “what does ‘Keys And Vices’ mean?", Jennifer Valdez answers, “the passion to create what you love, should above all, outweigh the compulsion to drown in vices.” Keys And Vices' new EP "Chronic Nostalgia" is available on all digital platforms NOW. The first of three singles to be released in early 2019, "Head High" displays a clean sense of identity. After receiving sync placements on various MTV shows, such as The Real World, MAYVE found themselves transitioning and evolving into a groovy, sugary, mainstream indie-esque pop sound. "Head High" sounds comforting and familiar, while also upholding a fresh, summer, and dreamy tone. MAYVE are self-aware; open-minded to experimentation, the band toys along various genre lines in their new music. About the single, MAYVE states: Head High, is part one of three singles that follow a first-person narrative on the altered perceptive state occurring in love and lust. We live in a time where lines are blurred between happiness and success and we exist as products of our perceived value in the eyes of our peers. Head High was conceived as the tropical sounds of summer discotheques met us in mysterious moments of self-reflection. High on the energy of life and love, confused by the road ahead, caught up somewhere in the middle. MAYVE is an alternative pop band from New York formed in the mid 2010s. We draw influence from the late '70s and early 80s just as much as we do from musical peers who interpret that same language. The translation of our influences has spanned across 2 EP's thus far as well as a recent single entitled "Neon". The 2016 release of the “Animals” EP contained songs of a youthful nature, introducing the band to a newly captivated audience and landing multiple spots on the MTV reality shows (The Real World, Are You The One?). Eager to keep fans invested, but also explore a more intimate side, the “Motion” EP was released in 2017, a DIY project containing songs that were honest, exploratory, and heartfelt. Once again eager to reinvent, 2018 brought the release of a new single, "Neon", a guitar-focused track with an explosive chorus, a catchy attempt at loud feelings. MAYVE wants their voice, their sound, their influence on whoever is listening to live in the divide of light and dark, speaking real emotions and confusing times on top of an otherwise uplifting soundtrack. There's a long road ahead and plenty to say. The next installment will come in the form of 3 staggered singles produced and engineered by Chad Copelin (Sufjan Stevens, Ben Rector, 5 Seconds of Summer, Broncho, Sports). It also mostly focuses on putting yourself first rather than being hard on yourself. Why was this song chosen to be your second release? I felt this song had a good contrast to the first single and brought a new shed of light on my genre. Do you plan on releasing more singles, or will the tracks that are already out lead up to a larger body of work? I plan on releasing another single but these releases will lead up to a new EP I plan to release around May. How would you describe Hazel Bloom’s sound in just 5 words? During the time Painted Young was a 4-piece, we had plans to make another record but so much stuff got in the way. Because of that, things kept getting pushed back and we were just sitting ducks. There were a lot of things out of our control that postponed our plans and we were just waiting. As soon as Painted Young became my solo project, I took advantage of it and wasted no time in making this EP. Is there a particular song on the record that you believe best represents Painted Young? I think there are a lot of songs on the EP that very well represent different aspects of Painted Young. “The Madhouse” definitely shows my high energy and upbeat side. “Summer Come Back” obviously shows the softer, more intimate side. Meanwhile, I think “Charming Number 3” showcases both sides pretty well. Your single “The Madhouse” gave listeners a taste of the sound on this record. Were any other songs in contention to be the lead single? Well “Little Girl” and “Summer Come Back” are both going to be on the EP just because I wanted to give them a home so I guess TECHNICALLY “Little Girl” was the lead single. But in this new era, I definitely saw “The Madhouse” as the lead single. Another song that was considered for lead single was “Needle in a Haystack,” mainly because I had already played that song live so many times before. But when comparing the two, “The Madhouse” was definitely the stronger contender. What are some lyrical themes discussed on the EP tracks? A lot of lyrics I write tend to involve love, heartbreak, and mental health. “The Madhouse” is more a metaphorical, chaotic approach on my experiences with mental health. “Needle in a Haystack” is about fate and all the coincidences & accidents it takes to put two people together. Do you plan on touring at all in 2019 to promote the EP? As of now, I am playing some shows and I have more booked that I can’t really reveal just yet. As for touring, I’m open to it. Right now, this year is a pretty open book so anything can happen! Please include all social and listening links! Jennifer Valdez: “I would say our song ‘Out of My Head’ represents our sound best. It was one of the last songs recorded for the upcoming album, but a lot of the new music we’re writing is more bass driven like that song. Kevin’s bass skills are unlike anyone I’ve ever met, he plays bass like a lead guitarist, and our next album will have a different feel because of that.” Kevin McCarty: “I would say the same as Jenn, ‘Out of My Head’, but y’all haven’t heard ‘Lemon Tree’ yet! Just wait.” While making this record, did you have the title pre-determined, or was the concept created after all songs were completed? Jennifer Valdez: “The concept of the album came to me after the songs were completed because they all had that same theme. I wrote and recorded most of the songs except a few on the album that were after Kris and Kevin joined the project, so you’ll hear the music shift with those songs compared to the ones I wrote the music myself. They definitely rescued my writer’s block near the end of the album and we’ll have a very different theme on the next album since we’re writing all the songs together.” Will you be touring at all to promote this record? Jennifer Valdez: “We’re ramping up and booking many future shows to promote this album and hopefully a tour will be in our near future!” Which track was the most difficult to write? Jennifer Valdez: “For me, it was the song ‘Count Back’. This was the first song I wrote for this album, and I struggled with trying to find a balance of writing all the different melodies and music parts, but without making it sound too busy or muddy. My best friend and amazing musician, Eric Davis, of the band ‘Ghost Color’ offered up a guitar hook and that beautiful piece inspired me to iron out the rest of the song. The final song additions to the album that I wrote with Kris and Kevin (Running Away, How Do I, Out of My Head) were seamless and practically wrote themselves because we’ve all been writing music together for many years in our previous band ‘March Into Paris’.” Kevin McCarty: “Not to sound cocky but none really. The way we work, vibe and click together kind of makes everything feel natural. The chemistry is strong in us!” What comes next for Keys And Vices? Jennifer Valdez: “We’re almost finished writing the songs for the next album. Don’t get too excited though, we want everyone to listen and enjoy this first album, connect with us and especially rock out with us! We’ll be releasing a new song later this year as a single, and then before you know it MORE NEW MUSIC. We are writing machines and can’t wait to get back in the studio!” Kevin McCarty: “Hmm… what comes next? I feel a comment from Pinky and The Brain will do well here so let me say, ‘it’s time to take over the world!’.” Facebook: @keysandvicesband Twitter: @keysandvices Instagram: @keysandvices Keys And Vices website: https://www.keysandvices.com/ ![]() NEW JERSEY, USA | MARCH 5TH, 2019 - New Jersey-based alternative rock project Painted Young have announced the upcoming release of their new EP, "I'm Not Gonna Wait," available on all digital platforms April 12th. Painted Young most recently released their single "The Madhouse," which serves as the lead single off of their forthcoming EP. Project frontman Chris Santos is filled with a vivacious energy - but that doesn't take away from his darker layers. "The Madhouse" digs into the usage of metaphors to express the frustration of being alone in your personal mental health issues. "I'm Not Gonna Wait" will continue to expand on their unique combination of pop punk, pop rock, and alternative influences. About the forthcoming EP, Santos states: This EP is very long overdue, and it feels good to be finally putting new music out there. For the fans that have stuck around since the beginning and through rebuilding, I’m sorry it took so long and thank you for being so patient. The songs on this EP are all based on personal experiences I’ve had. Whether the lyrics tend to be more direct (“Want your song? Here you go.”) or more metaphorical (“The Madhouse”), it’s all an extension of myself or something I’ve gone through. Painted Young is an alternative rock/pop punk solo project from Aberdeen, New Jersey, fronted by Chris Santos. The band name first came to be in 2012, when Santos brought some friends together to perform for a charity fundraiser at their high school. Santos started writing original music in 2014 and the first song he presented to the band was called “Leave Some Space for Me.” Less than a year later in 2015, they released their first EP, titled “Looking Forward to Never Looking Back.” The band takes musical inspiration from alternative rock and pop punk bands. With catchy pop melodies, lively guitars, and momentum-filled drums, Painted Young puts as much energy into their live shows as possible, in order to leave some form of an impact on the audience. Painted Young have played numerous venues, primarily in New Jersey, including the Brighton Bar, the Stanhope House, the Stone Pony, and Starland Ballroom. The band have also played some shows in Brooklyn, at venues such as Arlene’s Grocery and the Knitting Factory. They’ve opened for national acts such as Richie Ramone, Johnnie Guilbert, and SayWeCanFly. By December of 2017 while releasing an EP and two singles, there have been numerous lineup changes in the band. It had gotten to the point where fans and friends couldn’t keep up with who was part of the group anymore. A decision was made and with the blessings of past members, Santos chose to continue Painted Young as a solo project. In 2018, Santos started recording what will be Painted Young’s second EP with the help of J.R. Sanson at Bullet Proof Recording Studio in Hazlet, NJ. Painted Young's most recent single, "The Madhouse," is out NOW. NY, USA | MARCH 5TH, 2019 - NY-based alternative rock band Brookline have released a new music video for their single "Sinking," out NOW. The singles comes off of their brand new EP "Fade," just released in February. "Sinking" sings an emotional narrative, touching upon themes of heartbreak and addiction. "Sinking" is perhaps the best representation of the EP as a whole; elements of hard rock and pop punk are meshed together in the track, creating a unique blend that hints at influences of 90's alternative. The remaining EP tracks continue on a sentimental path, telling a full story centralized around the theme of toxicity. The music video is a clear representation of Brookline's goal to tell a meaningful story. About "Sinking," the band states: “Sinking” is the 2nd single off of Brookline’s Fade EP and tells the story of a relationship torn apart by addiction. The chorus hook “like a ship at sea you’re sinking, and I can’t be your lighthouse beacon” embodies the theme of the song; that although this person clearly needs help, their partner can no longer handle being subjected to their self destructive behavior and has to leave for their own good. A five piece alternative rock band from upstate New York, Brookline features Mikey Pace (guitar), Dae Bennett (guitar), Matt Spinner (bass), Chris Fox (drums), and Tommy Carter (vocals). Formed in 2018, the group has mixed influence from pop punk and emo to post-hardcore and 90’s alternative rock. In late 2018, they announced the upcoming release of their second EP "Fade," recorded with Jake Mannix of Indigo Audio Co. "Fade" shows a large amount of growth in musicianship as well as lyrical content from the groups earlier work. Touching on personal experiences of heartbreak, and the struggles of drug/alcohol abuse, "Fade" uses a combination of explosive hard rock, melodic emo, and alternative influence to express these themes to their listeners. Their new EP "Fade" is out NOW. You can watch the music video for "Sinking" HERE.
