INTERVIEW: shallow pool talks new single "Sinking", embracing change, and MORE + (EXCLUSIVE)

What prompted the decision to rebrand from Self Titled to shallow pools?

We just felt that we really outgrew the name and the music we were making with it! We knew we wanted to keep making music, but the new songs we made didn’t feel like they were Self Titled songs. We wanted to start fresh with a new name.

What’s the biggest difference between the branding of the two?

There’s much more thought behind everything we do for shallow pools. We want everything to be consistent. With Self Titled, we would record a song and immediately put it out without thinking about keeping a consistent image or sound. With shallow pools, we try to make sure every song fits with the vibe of the others and that our video and social content does as well.

How does “It’s A You Thing.” differ from anything else you’ve released in the past with Self Titled?

It’s a lot more mature! There’s more guitar parts, synth, and lyrics that really mean something to us. Self Titled was surface level and a great starting point for us to try things out. shallow pools is something we are a lot more connected to and proud of!

Now that you’ve established shallow pools, what’s the ultimate goal for the band?

To get as many people as possible to connect with our songs! We just want to keep playing music that we love and hopefully other people will love it too!

You’re releasing another single this month. Why was that chosen as the second single and not the debut for shallow pools? How is it different from “It’s A You Thing.”?

We decided to put out “It’s A You Thing.” first because we felt like it was a good teaser for what’s to come. We experimented a lot with synths and new sounds in this song, so we wanted people to know our new music was going to be much different than songs we put out in the past.
“Sinking” felt like the perfect follow up. It’s one of our favorite songs that we recorded and also one of the most fun songs to play live! The topic of the song is a little darker, but the music is still upbeat!

The music video for “It’s A You Thing.” pretty clearly represents your new branding and color palettes. Was this collectively planned between the three of you?

Yes it was! We all conceptualized it, Ali directed and edited it, and our friend Andrew Young brought it all to life as the co-director/cinematographer!
